As well as our gulet holidays on Salamander we are now also offering our beautiful holiday home on the island of Luing in western Scotland for rental on a similar ‘inclusive’ basis to Salamander, and we believe it will greatly appeal to the same customer base.
The stunning views of the Inner Hebrides and Western Isles bear strong resemblances to those seen when sailing in Turkey. Cullipool House has some of the most breathtaking views in the Western Isles and is a listed historic building, originally a Quarry Manager’s house for some of the famous slate quarries of Luing, Easdale, Belnahua and Seil, 'The islands that roofed the world'. The village of Cullipool itself is like a film set from the 19th century, with rows of tidy whitewashed and slated workers cottages. Cullipool is a small attractive village on the quiet island of Luing (population c. 200), and bears attractive witness to the very start of the industrial revolution. It is just half an hours drive and a 5 minute ferry crossing from the local metropolis of Oban, which has excellent shopping facilities as the gateway to the Western Isles. The northern end of Luing is wild and quite unspoilt, whilst the southern end is altogether softer and more arable. The world renowned Luing cattle breed hail from here.
It is rare to find an island with such a relaxed and friendly atmosphere so close to civilisation, and so easy to access. Car ferries travel every half hour or so during the day time, and passenger ferries are also available after normal hours. When you land on Luing you can put your clock back some 50 years! There is a real sense of community, crime is virtually non- existent, and strong family values will remind you of the 1950’s. Truly a place to relax, walk, fish, and enjoy nature at its most unspoilt.
Cullipool House has just been completely refurbished to a very high standard, with a completely new roof, enlarged social spaces, and a sunroom with views over the islands to die for. Sunsets over the Ross of Mull are unbelievable. The house sits in an acre of gardens just in front of the lovely old village of Cullipool, just 100 metres from the sea, and 5 minutes walk from the harbour. From the house you can see the islands of Scarba, Lunga, Rubha Fiola, Belnahua, Fladda, Black Isle, the Garvellachs and the Ross of Mull to the south and west, while to the North lies Easdale island, Inch island and the bottom of Mull. By fast boat the infamous whirlpool in the Gulf of Corryvreckan is just minutes away, as is the tide race known as Grey Dogs, and that other famous tide race at Cuan Sound is even closer. The Sound of Luing bears most of the sea traffic going up the west of Scotland, be it yachts, fishing boats, or commercial shipping there is always something to watch.
Cullipool House has 4 good sized bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, and breathtaking views. The 2 bedrooms at the western end facing the islands are both effectively en-suite. There are 2 more double bedrooms, one twin bedded and one with a double bed but also containing a pair of bunks and they share the 3rd bathroom. The small galley kitchen has all the facilities you might require, and is joined to the large ‘breakfast room’ where all your guests will eat. The sitting room has a gas fire, TV, Video player and lots of comfortable seating. The new sunroom on the western gable is a lovely place to dine and watch the sunsets.
The house has substantial pretty gardens and a paddock, and extensive outbuildings. There is a barbeque garden outside the sunroom.
In the village the local fisherman are pleased to sell you prawns, crabs, scallops and lobsters when available. Gulet holidays and gulet charter are a nice contrast.
